The NC Ducks Unlimited Band the Billfish Tournament Comes to the Crystal Coast This Weekend

NC Ducks Unlimited Band the Billfish TournamentThe Crystal Coast is home to great fishing and fishing tournaments alike. This weekend, the North Carolina Ducks Unlimited Band the Billfish Tournament comes to town. The tournament began in 1989 and since its inception, 163 blue marlins, 204 white marlins, and 447 sailfish have been released. That's a grand total of 870 billfish. That's a lot of fish; a lot of big fish! Speaking of big fish, in the tournament's inaugural year a 1002-pound blue marlin was boated. This has been the only grander thus far. Maybe it will happen again this year?

The Band the Billfish Tournament celebrates its 25th year in 2013 and runs from Thursday, July 25 through Saturday, July 27. Thursday offers boat registration, a captain's social, and a captain's meeting held at the Crystal Coast Civic Center with the meal provided by the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum. Friday is the first day of fishing running from 9a.m. to 3p.m. with a Friday night social at Jack's Waterfront Bar. Saturday is day two of fishing beginning at 8a.m. and continuing until 2p.m. The weigh station closes at 6p.m. and the awards and dinner banquet, catered by WindanSea Restaurant, begins at 7:30p.m. at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. Tickets are $75 to attend all three nightly events.
