Posted On Tuesday, June 3, 2014
The 56th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin fishing tournament casts off this week beginning on Friday, June 6 and continuing through Saturday, June 14. The tournament draws anglers of all ages and ability levels to the Crystal Coast waters annually for this big event. Spectators weigh-in on the tournament action daily at the Morehead City waterfront as the large game fish hit the scales.
About the Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing TournamentThe Big Rock fishing tournament is part of the NC Governor's Cup Series and is one of the oldest and largest sportfishing tournaments on the East Coast. It offers prizes for marlin releases, as well as weigh-ins for tuna, dolphin and wahoo. The total purse for the Big Rock exceeds $1 million dollars annually, with over $3 million going toward local charities.
History of the Big RockThe Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has an interesting history. The tournament gets its name from a structure on the continental shelf called "Big Rock" where the warm Gulf Stream waters intersect the colder coastal waters of the North Carolina coastline. Big Rock is not a rock at all but a series of ledges, peaks and plateaus about 8-10 miles long and 1 mile wide just a short distance from the Morehead City waterfront. Big Rock attracts small reef fish, which in turn attract larger fish, which in turn attract the blue marlin. The first blue marlin was caught in these local waters on September 14, 1957 by Raleigh angler Jimmy Croy. It weighed in at 143 pounds.
