The Best March Events and Things To Do on the Crystal Coast

The weather is fabulous, the days are getting longer and the coastal nights are star-filled and breathtaking on the coast of North Carolina. March has arrived and with spring on the horizon, the Crystal Coast is heating up with locally loved festivals, events and plenty of things to do both on the beach and off. Here are the highlights of this month in Emerald Isle and the greater Crystal Coast, with all of the best things to see, do and explore. Get out your calendar and mark down these dates!

Every Day: Beach fun and fishing

Beach season is warming up and it's time to get your daily dose of sand, sun and surf. The weather is fine and the views are spectacular. Any day and every day is the perfect time to get out there and enjoy the coastal beauty. Stroll the sands, get out on the water or just sit back and enjoy a good book. All that matters is that you get out there! It's also prime time to drop a line and see what you reel in. Beat the crowds and catch more fish.

March 10, 2017 @7pm: Friday Free Flicks, Finding Dory

Free family fun on a Friday, what's not to love about that? Wrap up the week by spending some quality time with the kids with a movie night out at the Emerald Isle Community Center. Leave the snacks at home but bring your chair or blanket and a dollar to buy your popcorn and drink. That's all you need! This month's showing is the family favorite film, Finding Dory. Movie time starts at 7pm. Don't miss it!

March 11, 2017 @9am-6pm: Emerald Isle St. Patrick's Festival

It's that time of year again. Get out your most festive St. Paddy's Day attire and join in the celebration at the 26th Annual Emerald Isle St. Patrick’s Festival on Saturday, March 11th from 9am-6pm at the Emerald Plantation shopping center. Admission to the festival and parking are free. This year’s festival features over 75 arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, amusement rides, face painters, and many other fun, family-oriented activities. No pets on festival grounds, please. Pssst! Rides open on Friday, March 10th from 5-10pm, so your best bet is to buy a $15 arm band that keeps you riding unlimitedly all evening.

March 20 & 27, 2017 @9am: Pre-K Storytime and Playtime

Storytime is followed by open play in the Emerald Isle Community Center’s gymnasium from 9-10am for babies and kids up to age 5. It's a ton of fun for the wee ones. Children must be accompanied by an adult, as supervision is not provided. Come by and meet other parents and kids in the community. See some old friends and make some new ones.

March 25, 2017 @6:15am: Emerald Isle Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K

Start training now for the 4th Annual Emerald Isle Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K happening at the Western Ocean Regional Access in Emerald Isle. The 2016 races attracted nearly 1500 runners and raised more than $60,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Emerald Isle bike path. The 2017 races benefit the Crystal Coast Autism Center and the Emerald Isle bike path. Sign up here.

Meet in Fort Macon to learn about a 19th century musket's history, loading procedures, and firing. You might want to bring your ear plugs!

March 10, 2017 @7pm: Astronomy and Star Gazing

Meet at the Fort Macon bathhouse to view space through a telescope and learn more about our amazing universe.

March 13, 2017 @9am: Bird Hike

Meet at the Fort Macon Visitor Center and take a leisurely hour-long hike to identify birds native to the area.

March 16, 2017 @10am: The Natural Side of Fort Macon Leisurely Hike

Meet in the Visitor Center lobby for a leisurely hike exploring the natural side of Fort Macon. The hour-long hike covers both trail and beach.

March 31, 2017 @3pm: Spy Sensibilities

Come out to Ft. Macon and learn about the contributions women spies made during the mid-1800’s.


At the NC Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores

March 11, 2017 @10am-4pm: Fairy Day at the Aquarium

Put on some wings, a dash of glitter and let your imagination fly during the Aquarium’s annual Fairy Day. Build fairy and gnome houses on the nature trail, search for mermaid and fairy doors around the Aquarium and make your own magic wand. Add to the fun and come dressed as a fairy, gnome, sea serpent or other mythical character. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Free with admission or membership!

March 18, 2017 @8am-5pm: Get Hooked Fishing School

Tune up your fishing skills and learn a few new ones in time for the spring season during the 10th Annual Get Hooked Fishing School on Saturday, March 18 at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. The day-long seminar features in-depth presentations by experienced anglers on fishing techniques and species-specific methods. During the event you can ask specific questions related to fishing gear or fish habitats which gives you better insight on how to target specific fish species along North Carolina’s coast.

March 17, 2017 @4-7pm: NC State Extension Open House

The Carteret County Office of NC State Extension is holding an open house to see what NC State Extension is all about. Located on the 3rd floor of the CMAST building on the Carteret Community College Campus, stop by to learn more about what is offered including local youth development programs in 4-H, health and wellness programs in Family and Consumer Sciences, environmental education programs and Big Sweep clean-ups. Agricultural programs including row crops, livestock, home gardening and the extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program. You might be surprised at all they have to offer you and your family.

March 17-19, 24-26, 2017: Carteret Community Theater Presents: The Odd Couple (Friday and Saturday performances @8pm. Sunday matinees @2pm.)

This classic comedy opens as a group of the guys assemble for cards in the apartment of divorced Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it's no wonder that his wife left him. Late to arrive is Felix Unger, who has just been separated from his wife. Fastidious, depressed, and none too tense, Felix seems suicidal, but as the action unfolds, Oscar becomes the one with murder on his mind when the clean freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with hilarious results as The Odd Couple is born.

March 23, 2017 @5:20 & 6:30pm with a bonus showing March 24 @2:30pm: International Film Series: Nakom

The International Film Series is back at it this year with four new films from four new countries. Join in for a wonderful dinner catered by Floyd's 1921 and inspired by the featured movie's country. Dinner is at 6pm where you can enjoy cuisine that reflects the culture of the evening's movie. The cost is $35/person (includes dinner and one drink ticket). Cash bar is also available. After dinner stroll over to Joslyn Hall for popcorn and the movie! Admission to the movie is free, but donations support the series.

March 23, 2017: Escoffier Chef Dinner Series featuring Chef Anthony Garnett

The popular dinner series is back! Enjoy a four-course meal prepared by culinary students and top local chefs. This is an annual event that occurs once a month during January, February, March and April. This year they are offering four dinners in the series. All four dinners feature the best French Cuisine in the form of a four-course meal. Individual dinners cost $60 per person and are held at the Crystal Coast Civic Center. This event sells out every year! The featured chef this month is Anthony Garnett, Executive Chef of the Coral Bay Club in Atlantic Beach. Get your tickets and bring your appetite!

March 27, 2017 @6pm: Climate Change: Science and Impacts in Eastern NC Lecture

What is climate change, and is it real? Will it affect us in eastern North Carolina? Dr. Rosana Nieto Ferreira, Associate Professor of Atmospheric Science at East Carolina University discusses this topic and answers related questions on Monday, March 27, 2017 at Joslyn Hall, McGee Building on the campus of Carteret Community College, Morehead City. This is a free lecture with doors opening at 6pm for light refreshments and a meet and greet, then the lecture and presentation follow from 7-8pm.
