Summer's Still in Full Swing: August Calendar of Events

As a child, August was always the month that we both anticipated and despised as the approaching school year came closer and closer. However, here at the beach, we have learned that the best way to get rid of said dread is too...well, head to the beach! Summer isn't over yet and we're still spending our mornings out on the water, our afternoons on the beach, our nights at the concerts or watching movies. We're going to make the most out of every moment!

Starting out this month, we're learning how to actually catch the infamous fish, you know the one that "got away." Join the friendly staff and volunteers at the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium as they teach how to catch those big fish at the Fishing Fanatics events.

You can also head over to the Aquarium for lessons in Stand-up Paddle Boarding, a day learning about and appreciating owls for International Owl Awareness Day and sea turtles for the Sea Turtle Celebration, or a seminar for how to catch your own crabs and clams! (Does anyone else smell a clambake coming on?)

We also have plenty to do for the active members of the family looking for something fun and energetic! The 2015 Beach Fun Run series is taking place on the 6th. Join both locals and visitors to the beach as they run 1 mile, 5K, or 10K along the beautiful Atlantic Beach. Check out this website for more information on the location and registration for this great event that is both a fun and healthy way to enjoy the beach! Another fun, active event will be the Youth Surfing Competition on the 20th which will be led by the Eastern Surfing Association and the Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation. Children that are 14 years and younger can enjoy this free event as they learn more about the coast's favorite sport!

One of the most exciting events for all ages this month is the Beaufort Pirate Invasion on the 7th as the entire town joins in to reenact an actual pirate event from 1757! This is going to be such a fun, interactive event for the whole family as you embrace your inner pirate and enjoy some fun games, a parade, activities, crafts, lunch with pirates and more!

The art goers can enjoy Plein Air Art in Morehead City on the 15th as artists enjoy a day painting outside. Watch the masterpiece come to life and maybe pick a souvenir of your vacation in the form of a painting while you are there!

There are also several evenings planned for visitors to enjoy the beautiful Cape Lookout Lighthouse and surrounding area this month! An Evening at Cape Lookout Lighthouse will not only allow you to learn more about the history of the lighthouse and the people that kept it, but also to enjoy the beautiful night air, moon, and stars of the Crystal Coast!

You can also spend your evenings listening to some of the best summer concerts around at the EmeraldFest, the Fort Macon Concert Series, Alive at Five Concerts, or Live on Thursdays. You can also enjoy some fun music and dancing in Emerald Isle at the Laser Light Show and Dance Party at the Recreation Center!

If you're feeling a little more like sitting and relaxing for the evening, you can enjoy Seaside Cinemas (playing "Dolphin Tale 2" and "The Wizard of Oz" this month) in Atlantic Beach, or the Free Friday Flick (playing "Paddington" on the 14th) in Emerald Isle.

There are so many amazing things going on this month as we hold on to the last full month of summer with fun beach activities, pirates, movies, music, and more! Don't miss out on a single thing! You can find out more about some of the best Crystal Coast events on this website, and of course continue to check our blog with weekly updates for your perfect beach vacation
