8 Great Game Night Ideas for the Best Family Time
Family game night is a wonderful way to spend some quality time together with those you love the most during your next Emerald Isle, North Carolina beach vacation. It's the perfect opportunity to gather everyone together (and get them off of their electronics) for some good old fashioned family fun, lots of laughter, and lasting memories. Your Emerald Isle rental is the best place to host your game night because it's comfortable and has everything you need for a night full of family fun. Here are a few games that are easy to pack up and travel with—and have a solid reputation for providing a good time for all. Enjoy!
This anagram game will drive you bananas! Bananagrams is an award-winning word game that needs no pencil, paper, or board. Players race against each other to build crossword grids and use all their letter tiles first. The small, portable banana-shaped pouch is great for travel and perfect for everyone ages 7 and up. It's similar to Scrabble but simpler and requires no board or score keeping. This is the classic version, but there are other variations to choose from, so be sure to check out all your options.
Ah, dominoes. When is the last time you played? And do you know how many different ways to play there are? A lot! That's why this game is a wonderful choice for family vacations. You can change up the games to your liking or skill level and everyone can play. A basic domino set is not very costly and can easily be packed up and take with you on your family vacation. Check out a few of the most popular ways to play dominoes here. Don't forget to bring a set with you to your Emerald Isle rental!
Remember how much fun you had doing Mad Libs back in the day with your friends? Well it is still just as fun and silly today as it was back then. It's time to introduce your kids to this classic! It works well as a family-style game where one person is chosen as the recorder while everyone else contributes ideas for the missing words. Someone is designated to ask for a part of speech, a verb, a noun, an adjective or an adverb. Players call out their ideas to fill in the blanks—and in the end, you have a story reeling from one silly sentence to another until nothing makes sense.
Pictionary is a game night classic and can be played individually or in groups, while also being a good choice for all ages. The modern version of this game includes eco-friendly white boards with erasable markers if you so choose to buy it, but you could also quickly whip up a homemade version of this game with some scrap paper and any kind of drawing utensil you have on hand. You could also use an electronic tablet or iPad to play because like everything else in this day and age— there's an app for that.
If you've ever played Spoons, you might not recall it actually being a game set but rather just a deck or cards and some spoons from the kitchen drawer. Today you can buy the game if you prefer, but we like the authentic classic version best. This is a card grabbin', spoon snaggin' game that will leave you left out if you don't pay close attention. It's just a matter of getting the cards you need and grabbing a spoon before they're all gone. It sounds pretty simple, but you'll quickly see how this game escalates to a high-adrenaline adventure. Watch how to play Spoons here.
Is it even game night if you don't play a round or two of UNO? This classic game is a crowd favorite and is easy enough to play with even the youngest of participants. The customizable cards add in an extra level of fun where you get to choose the result for the blank wild cards. Of course, there are UNO games that go beyond the traditional deck, such as UNO Attack, UNO Flip, Emoji UNO, and many more! You can switch it up with a different version of this card game for a literal game changer. Check out all your UNO options here.
Would You Rather?
For this game, we're choosing a homemade version of Would You Rather. These are great family-friendly questions for kids. Some of the questions you see online can be questionable or not appropriate for families. These are good clean ones. Use them for game night and to help you get to know your family a bit better. This is a fun and interesting way to get your kids and teens talking—and it's fun for adults, too. You just have to remember to print out the questions before your vacation or you can read them right from your phone or tablet if you prefer.
Yahtzee To Go
Yahtzee! It's the same dice game you know and love but Yahtzee To Go is travel size so that all you need fits right in the cup. Genius! It's so easy to pack and take with you pretty much anywhere you go from your Emerald Isle rental, to the beach, and everywhere in between. Part of the fun for most kids is the shaking of the dice in the cup, which of course comes with a lot of rattling noise—but if you need or want a quieter option, you can always line the inside of the cup with felt. Problem solved! No matter which way you go, it's a fun one for family night or any time you want a game on the go.
