We’ve got you covered in this blog! Here are the highlights of the local Emerald Isle beach rules and regulations, and what you can expect before you arrive. Have you booked your Emerald Isle rental yet?

GENERAL EMERALD ISLE BEACH RULES

Like any other beautiful beach, Emerald Isle values its coastal beauty and natural treasures. Local visitors, vacationers, and residents strive to do their part in preserving this little piece of barrier island paradise, and we know you will too! Please be mindful of your trash and make sure it ends up in one of the many trash cans or recycling containers found at the beach access points. Whether it’s your litter or someone else’s, please put it in its proper place so it is not left on the beach or in the local waters. Cigarette butts should not be left on the beach either, but disposed of properly. Remember the saying: Leaving nothing behind but your footprints!

DOGS ON THE BEACH IN EMERALD ISLE

Emerald Isle is a dog-friendly beach and town! Local ordinances require dogs to be leashed at all times—and that you pick up after your pup, of course. If you’d like to read more about dog-friendly Emerald Isle, check out this related reading.

BEACH TENTS, CANOPIES & CAMPING

Beach equipment, including tents and canopies, must be removed from the beach when you leave—and can’t be left overnight. Emerald Isle does not allow overnight camping on the beach.

FIRES & FIREWORKS ON THE BEACH

Fires are not permitted on the beach in Emerald Isle. Fireworks are illegal in North Carolina and include anything that leaves the ground or explodes. Police can confiscate fireworks and file charges against offenders.

LIFEGUARDS & BEACH WARNING FLAGS

Emerald Isle Lifeguards are on duty daily from 10a.m. to 5p.m. from late May through early September at the western and eastern beach access points. The beach warning flags indicate the current conditions and Emerald Isle flies these flags at both regional beach access facilities and on all of the town’s beach patrol vehicles. Please look for these warning flags on the beaches and know what they mean, so that you can avoid hazards and have a safe and enjoyable beach experience in Emerald Isle. RIP CURRENTS & OCEAN SAFETY

Knowing what to do if you get caught in a rip current is a vital safety measure that all beach goers should familiarize themselves with before heading into the ocean waters. Staying calm and conserving your energy is at the top of the list. Don’t try to fight the current because it will quickly exhaust you. Swim out of the current in a direction that follows the shoreline until you can swim toward the shore. If you can’t do that, then try to tread water or float until you can get out of it or call for help if you can’t get to shore.

SURFING & OTHER WATERSPORTS

Surfing is allowed in Emerald Isle waters except for within 200 feet of the ocean fishing pier. Jet skis and other personal watercraft may not be operated at a speed greater than five miles per hour within 200 feet of the shoreline or within 500 feet of an ocean fishing pier.

SEA TURTLE NESTS

If you are a regular follower and reader of Sun-Surf Realty’s blogs, you know that we are avid sea turtle lovers. The Town of Emerald Isle is a sea turtle sanctuary and works diligently to protect this vulnerable population. Sea turtle nests are marked with wooden posts, tape and signage—and should be avoided so as not to disturb the nests, nesting females, or hatchlings. Also, don’t forget to fill in any holes you or your family has dug in the sand before you leave. You can read more about what you need to know about sea turtles in Emerald Isle, NC here.

DRIVING ON THE BEACH IN EMERALD ISLE

Off-season driving on the beach is allowed for four-wheel-drive vehicles with a town-issued permit between the dates of September 15 and April 30 only (closed for driving during Easter week). Visit the Town Administration Building at 7509 Emerald Drive to purchase an annual permit or call 252-354-3424. Beach vehicle access ramps are located at the 3000 block of Ocean Drive (the “dog-leg”), the end of Black Skimmer Drive, the end of Doe Drive, and at The Point.
